• Sen. John McCain likes Online-Scrabble.com!
  • I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this :)
To our newer members, http://www.online-scrabble.com is my website that I created back in 2005.

“Bored” McCain to Create Personal MySpace Page

Saying he is “bored beyond tears” after losing the presidential election, Senator John McCain
today announced that he will be creating a personal MySpace page sometime this week. The
announcement came during McCain’s weekly conference call with reporters on Tuesday.

    ...

Links to other websites that McCain enjoys, such as FoxNews.com, GlennBeck.com,
MichaelMedved.com, and Online-Scrabble.com will also be on his page
    . Visitors will be
encouraged to email the Senator directly, with McCain promising to return all messages
personally. “I really think this email thing is going to catch on”, said McCain, “and I want to be
on the leading edge of it”.

Yes, I acknowledge that it is from a satirical newspaper website. But I live by the saying "where there's smoke...", so I think this is all but confirmation that former presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is a fan of Online-Scrabble.com.

  • Celebrating the 5th anniversary of CricketMX!
  • 5 years ago today, I set up CMX :)

It's been a wonderful journey, and I look forward to seeing what the next 5 years have in store for us. It is a testament to the success of the site and the dedication of all of the wonderful members of CMX that for the 5th year running we were able to reach over 10,000 posts for the year - since January 11, 2004 CricketMX has averaged a remarkable 50.17 posts per day.

For something a bit different, I was hoping everyone could post one of the memories of their time at CMX that stands out in their minds :)

    I will start:

Before CMX, there was the Winmxcommunity - which a lot of the long time members were a part of. I posted an article about Winmxcommunity just a few minutes ago, which is a blast from the past if you would like to read it: http://www.cricketmx.com/articles/read/ ... of-an-era/

If I had never registered at Winmxcommunity, I would never have had the inspiration to create CMX. I had one particular conversation with the owner of Winmxcommunity - Vulpes - which probably convinced me to go ahead and start a forum. Bear in mind, I have used 3 new computers since this conversation took place in late 2003, so it is remarkable that I still have it to post here today!

Here it is... (I knew absolutely nothing about forums at this time  )

<battye> its a great forum u have vulpes
<Vulpes> yeah thats where everything is stored
<Vulpes> from posts to users to private messages
<battye> so the forum wouldnt run without it?
    <Vulpes> no wawy
    <Vulpes> way
<Vulpes> sql server is like a storage building
<Vulpes> while the forum you see is a store where you browse products
<battye> could you use other databases like ms access? or does it have to
    run on sql?
    <Vulpes> i think you cant
<battye> you cant? or did u accidentally hit t lol
<battye> ive been thinking of making a forum, so im just curious as to
    what u need
    <Vulpes> you can
    <battye> ok
<battye> i dl that php thing off their website, the only thing that my
comp. understood were the pictures lol, then i read that u need an sql,

<battye> the zip off their site, i dont have sql, only found out what it
did when u told me a few minutes ago
<battye> is sql free? or do u dl it somewhere?
    <Vulpes>www.mysql.com
    <Vulpes> its free
    <battye> really, great!
<battye> so, if i dl this, i should be able to make my own forum?
<battye> to create it, do i need to be on the net, or can u do it all
    offline, then publish it?
<Vulpes> you will also need a http server
    <Vulpes> such as apache
    <battye> i need a server?
    <Vulpes> yes
<battye> i didnt no that lol
<battye> why do i need a server? to host it when publishing?
    <Vulpes> to access it too
    <battye> to edit it?
<battye> sorry, i dont no too much about servers besides what they are lol
    <Vulpes> to do anything
<battye> oh, the part about needing a server kinda turned me off, thanks
    for all the help though
    <battye> cya later
    <Vulpes> bye

  • Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
  • 2008 has been another exciting year for CricketMX. The biggest event of the year would have to have been our 4th anniversary and the big upgrade, which also included a brand new website. The articles section of the website has been a huge success, with some even gaining mentions on other websites (and a shout out to http://www.tatayoungworld.com who were so impressed, that they have linked permanently to CricketMX.com). Closer to home, the articles have generated over 6 pages of discussion in The Articles Topic. We've yet to hit the front page of Digg, but one article did very well on StumbleUpon

Without further ado, the top viewed articles of the year are:

Taking into consideration all 29 articles posted this year, they come to a combined view count of 8181, which is not bad at all for a single year :)

A special thanks in particular to P2P, who has made many suggestions for articles this year, as well as providing background information and then checking the articles for accuracy once it has been written. Thank you mate! :)

Right now we are sitting on a total of 9930 posts for the year, a mere 70 away from our target of 10000. Thank you to everyone that has posted this year, especially moongirl, P2P and garmy who are all in the "high thousands", with less than 100 posts separating the top posters of the year. I think quahappy and tune deserve a special mention too, for their huge contributions in the last few months :)

Thank you prototech for your ongoing commitment to CricketMX, you have gone above and beyond for the work you have put into our logos; particularly this wonderful Christmas theme we have now. You have also kept the CricketMX tradition of snowflakes at Christmas alive, I think it looks at its best on the homepage :)

Merry Christmas to everyone and my best wishes for 2009. On January 11th we will be celebrating our 5th anniversary! =D>

  • Quick Reply and Search link back by popular demand
  • The topic title says it all :)

In addition to upgrading the board to the latest version, I have gone ahead and added quick reply (click the Quick Reply link next to the Post Reply button and the box will appear) and the search link (top right).

I was going to add a new theme (a dark or black theme) to the forum, but due to the recent release of phpBB 3.0.3 I'm going to hold off on that in case the style authors are going to update their styles.

Enjoy, and please let me know if there are any problems. I might alter the quick reply slightly in the future, I think it is a bit too big at the moment, I preferred it when it was small and on the left hand side like it was last year :)
