While clearly created in order to ride on the success of Apple's "iTunes Store" which includes downloadable Apps, Music and Videos, it's doubtful that the Verizon "Media Store" will pose any great threat to Apple.

The store, which you can browse at the Verizon website looks suspiciously familiar to Apple's store. Their music is sourced from the Rhapsody service, and will be available for download on April 7. Songs will be priced at (USD) $0.69, $0.99 and $1.29 - most of the 5,000,000 songs will come without DRM. Ringtones will also be available for download.

The pricing structure means that new releases will see a price of $1.29, while older songs will be priced at $0.69. The majority of songs will be listed at $0.99 like iTunes.

Any "Get It Now" capable mobile phone from Verizon will be able to access the Media Store wirelessly and have access to an App Store (programs for the mobile phone). It is expected that over time Verizon will expand its range to a variety of different mobile phones that the company sells.

Verizon share prices have risen by one percentage point since the announcement was made yesterday.
