    Microsoft Windows Server 2008 is the next version of the Microsoft Windows Server family. It should hit the streets February 27th in its final form. Currently you can download and test 2008 Server RC1.

    2008 Server is being touted as the most advanced version of Windows Server to date, designed to power the next-generation of networks, applications, and Web services. Windows Server 2008 builds on the success and strengths of its Windows Server predecessors while delivering valuable new functionality and powerful improvements to the base operating system. New Web tools, virtualization technologies, security enhancements, and management utilities help save time, reduce costs, and provide a solid foundation for your information technology (IT) infrastructure.

    * Built for the Web Windows Server 2008 comes with Internet Information Services 7.0 (IIS7), a Web server and security-enhanced, easy-to-manage platform for developing and reliably hosting Web applications and services. A major enhancement to the Windows Web platform, IIS7 includes a componentized architecture for greater flexibility and control. IIS7 also provides simplified management, powerful diagnostic and troubleshooting capabilities that save time, and comprehensive extensibility.
    Internet Information Server IIS7 together with the .NET Framework 3.0 provide a comprehensive platform for building applications that connect users and data, enabling them to visualize, share, and act on information. Additionally, IIS7 plays a central role in unifying Microsoft's Web platform technologies - ASP.NET, Windows Communication Foundation Web services, and Windows SharePoint Services.

    * Virtualization Built In Microsoft Windows Server Hyper-V, the next-generation hypervisor-based server virtualization technology, allows you to make the best use of your server hardware investments by consolidating multiple server roles as separate virtual machines running on a single physical machine. You can also efficiently run multiple operating systems - Windows, Linux and others - in parallel on a single server. With virtualization built into the Windows Server 2008 operating system and simple licensing policies, it's now easier than ever to take advantage of the cost savings of virtualization.

    Applications can also be efficiently virtualized using Windows Server 2008 centralized application access technologies. Terminal Services Gateway and Terminal Services RemoteApp allow easy remote access to standard Windows-based programs from anywhere by running them on a terminal server instead of directly on a client computer - without the need for a complicated VPN.

    * Security Windows Server 2008 is the most secure Windows Server yet. The operating system has been hardened to protect against failure and several new technologies help prevent unauthorized connections to your networks, servers, data, and user accounts. Network Access Protection (NAP) helps ensure that computers that try to connect to your network comply with your organization's security policy. Technology integration and several enhancements make Active Directory services a potent unified and integrated Identify and Access (IDA) solution. And Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC) and BitLocker Drive Encryption allow you to more securely deploy your AD database at branch office locations.

    * A Solid Foundation for Your Business Workloads Windows Server 2008 provides a solid foundation for all of your server workload and application requirements while being easy to deploy and manage. The all-new Server Manager provides a unified management console that simplifies and streamlines server setup, configuration, and ongoing management. Windows PowerShell, a new command-line shell, enables administrators to automate routine system administration tasks across multiple servers. Windows Deployment Services provides a simplified, secure means of rapidly deploying the operating system via network-based installations. And Windows Server 2008 Failover Clustering wizards, and full IPv6 support plus consolidated management of Network Load Balancing, make high availability easy to implement even by IT generalists.
    Finally, the new Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008 allows for installation of server roles with only the necessary components and subsystems without a graphical user interface. Fewer roles and features means minimizing disk and service footprints while reducing attack surfaces. It also enables your IT staff to specialize according to the server roles they need to support.
    Server 2008 will come in eight different versions much like Windows Vista. The editions are as follows

    * Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition Windows Server 2008 Enterprise delivers an enterprise-class platform for deploying business-critical applications. Help improve availability with clustering and hot-add processor capabilities. Help improve security with consolidated identity management features. Reduce infrastructure costs by consolidating applications with virtualization licensing rights. Windows Server 2008 Enterprise provides the foundation for a highly dynamic, scalable IT infrastructure.

    * Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Windows Server 2008 Datacenter delivers an enterprise-class platform for deploying business-critical applications and large-scale virtualization on small and large servers. Improve availability with clustering and dynamic hardware partitioning capabilities. Reduce infrastructure costs by consolidating applications with unlimited virtualization licensing rights. Scale from 2 to 64 processors. Windows Server 2008 Datacenter provides a foundation on which to build enterprise-class virtualization and scale-up solutions.

    * Windows Web Server 2008 Designed to be used specifically as a single-purpose Web server, Windows Web Server 2008 delivers on a rock solid foundation of Web infrastructure capabilities in the next generation Windows Server 2008. Integrated with the newly re-architected IIS 7.0, ASP.NET, and the Microsoft .NET Framework, Windows Web Server 2008 enables any organization to rapidly deploy Web pages, Web sites, Web applications, and Web services.

    * Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems is optimized for large databases, line of business and custom applications providing high availability and scalability up to 64 processors to meet the needs of demanding and mission critical solutions.

    * Windows Server 2008 Standard without Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 is the most robust Windows Server operating system to date. This product does not include Windows Server Hyper-V.
    Hyper-V seems to be the new technology Microsoft is very excited about. Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V is the hypervisor-based virtualization feature included as a role of Windows Server 2008. It contains everything needed to support machine virtualization. Hyper-V enables IT organizations to reduce costs, to improve server utilization and to create a more-dynamic IT infrastructure. Hyper-V provides the greater flexibility because of dynamic, reliable and scalable platform capabilities combined with a single set of integrated management tools to manage both physical and virtual resources, which enables you to create an agile and dynamic datacenter and progress toward achieving self-managing dynamic systems.
    In addition to Hyper-V, Microsoft is also releasing Microsoft Hyper-V Server. Microsoft Hyper-V Server provides a simplified, reliable, cost-effective and optimized virtualization solution enabling customers to reduce costs, to improve server utilization and to provision new servers rapidly. Microsoft Hyper-V Server easily plugs into customers' IT infrastructures as they can leverage their existing management tools and IT professional skill set with broad support from Microsoft and its partners.
    Other features of Windows Server 2008 are as follows

    * Failover Clustering The improvements to failover clusters in Windows Server 2008 are aimed at simplifying clusters, making them more secure, and enhancing cluster stability.

    * Identity and Access Microsoft Windows Server 2008 expands on the Microsoft Identity and Access foundation with several new features and technologies that help organizations improve operational efficiency, reduce IT costs, simplify compliance, and strengthen security.

    * Internet Information Services 7.0 One of the most exciting new technologies delivered in Windows Server 2008 is Microsoft's latest Web server, Internet Information Services 7.0 (IIS7). IIS7 is really more than just a Web server???it is a security-enhanced, easy-to-manage platform for developing and reliably hosting Web applications and services. IIS7 is also the backbone that supports and unifies the next generation of Windows Web platform technologies, including ASP.NET 2.0, Windows Communication Foundation Web services, and Windows SharePoint Services.

    * Microsoft Windows Deployment Services in Windows Server 2008 Microsoft Windows Deployment Services is the next version of Microsoft Remote Installation Services (RIS). Windows Deployment Services provides for storing, managing, and deploying images. It uses the Pre-Boot eXecution Environment (PXE) boot process to install the operating system, including new computer installations.

    * Network Access Protection and Enforcement Network Access Protection (NAP) is the policy enforcement platform built into the Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 operating systems that helps protect and maintain system health in your organization.     * Server Manager Server Manager is a new feature that is included in Windows Server 2008. It is a "one-stop shop" designed to guide Information Technology (IT) administrators through the end-to-end process of installing, configuring, and managing server roles and features that are part of Windows Server 2008. Server Manager replaces and consolidates a number of features from Microsoft Windows Server 2003, such as Manage Your Server, Configure Your Server, and Add or Remove Windows Components.

    * Storage and Print Features In Microsoft Windows Server 2008 the printer subsystem includes a new printer architecture that provides users with better printer and print server performance and provides a new foundation for future applications. The new print architecture not only maintains compatibility with existing applications and printer drivers but also gives existing applications the ability to use features that can only be found in the new XPSDrv printer drivers.
